Skate Sizing Guide

Skate Sizing Guide

Choosing the right skate size is the single most important step to a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable skate. This guide covers UK sizing for adult and kids inline and quad skates, plus everything you need to know about adjustable skates.

Step 1 – Measure Your Foot

  1. Place a sheet of paper on a hard floor and stand on it with your heel against a wall.
  2. Mark the tip of your longest toe.
  3. Measure the distance from the wall to the mark in millimetres (mm).
  4. Use the tables below to find your UK skate size. If you fall between two sizes, size up.

Tip: measure both feet and use the larger measurement — feet are rarely identical.

Adult Inline & Quad Skate Sizes (UK)

Heel-to-Toe (mm) UK Size EU Size
220 – 226 UK 3 EU 36
227 – 233 UK 4 EU 37
234 – 240 UK 5 EU 38
241 – 247 UK 6 EU 39
248 – 254 UK 7 EU 41
255 – 261 UK 8 EU 42
262 – 268 UK 9 EU 43
269 – 275 UK 10 EU 44
276 – 282 UK 11 EU 46
283 – 289 UK 12 EU 47

Skate sizing generally runs true to street shoe size. If you wear a half size, round up to the nearest whole UK size.

Kids Inline & Quad Skate Sizes (UK)

140 – 146 UK 8 (Junior) EU 25–26
147 – 153 UK 9 (Junior) EU 27
154 – 160 UK 10 (Junior) EU 28
161 – 167 UK 11 (Junior) EU 29
168 – 174 UK 12 (Junior) EU 30–31
175 – 181 UK 13 (Junior) EU 32

189 – 195 UK 2 (Youth) EU 34
196 – 202 UK 3 (Youth) EU 35–36

Children's feet grow quickly — check sizing every 3–4 months and consider adjustable skates for younger skaters.

Inline vs Quad Skates – Does the Fit Differ?

Both inline and quad skates follow the same UK size scale. That said, there are a few fit nuances:

  • Inline skates tend to have a narrower boot profile and a snugger heel hold. They should feel firm around the ankle with your heel locked down. If you have a wider foot, size up or look for models labelled wide fit.
  • Quad / roller skates typically have a more relaxed toe box. Your toes should sit flat with about 3–5 mm of space at the tip.
  • For both types, your heel should not lift more than a few millimetres when you flex your ankle forward.

Adjustable Skates – How They Work

Adjustable skates span several UK sizes in one skate, making them a popular choice for children.

  • Size range: Most adjustable models cover a range of 3–4 UK sizes (e.g. UK 12 Junior – UK 2 Youth). Check the product page for the specific range.
  • Setting the size: Use the adjustment button or lever at the toe cap to expand or contract the boot. Set it at the smaller end of your child's current size so there is growing room without the boot being too loose.
  • Fit check: With the skate set and laced up, your child's toes should just touch the front of the boot with no heel lift when walking. A boot that is too large causes blisters and poor control.
  • When to adjust: Check fit every 3–4 months or at the start of each skating season. When a child reaches the top of the adjustable range, move up to the next skate.
  • Inner liner: Some models include a removable soft inner liner — refer to the manufacturer's guide for your specific skate.
